What goes into our aluminium windows and doors
Three choices decide how an aluminium window or door looks, works and lasts. We go through them with you on the measure and write them on every line of the quote, so you can compare like with like.
Profiles
The profile is the aluminium section that the frame and sashes are made from. Lighter domestic sections suit standard bedroom, kitchen and bathroom windows. Heavier sections carry wide sliding sashes, tall fixed panes, patio sliders, bifolds and pivot doors. We choose the section opening by opening instead of one size for the whole house.
Glass
Clear float glass for most windows; frosted or patterned glass for bathrooms and street-facing rooms; tinted or reflective glass to cut glare on west- and north-facing walls; and laminated or toughened safety glass for doors, large panes and glass near the floor. The window codes and glass section below explains what to look for on a quote.
Finishes & hardware

Window frames
Aluminium and steel window frames, made to measure
When people in Botswana ask for window frames they usually mean the whole window: the frame fixed into the wall, the opening sashes and the glass. We make both kinds in our Gabane workshop.
Aluminium window frames usually go in once the openings are built and plastered, so we quote from your plan and confirm every size with a site measure before anything is cut. Old steel frames can be taken out and replaced with aluminium. See aluminium windows.

Pivot doors
Aluminium pivot doors for statement entrances
A pivot door turns on a pivot in the floor and another in the head of the frame instead of hinges on the side. That lets the leaf be wider and taller than a normal hinged door, which is why pivot doors are popular for modern entrances, lodges and office lobbies.
Because the whole leaf hangs on those two points, the opening matters. On the measure we check that the floor is level, agree the finished floor height with you or your builder, and look at the beam or lintel above. A pivot door is harder to seal against wind-driven rain than a rebated hinged door, so a canopy or roof overhang over the entrance helps.

What drives the cost of aluminium windows and doors
We do not publish a price list, because two openings of the same width can cost very different amounts. These are the things that actually move an aluminium quote:
- Size and number of openings. Bigger frames use more profile and glass, and a full-house schedule is quoted line by line.
- Type. Fixed panes cost least. Sliding, casement and top-hung sashes, bifold and stacking doors and pivot doors add hardware and labour.
- Profile range. Heavier sections for wide sashes and tall doors cost more than light domestic sections.
- Glass. Frosted, tinted, reflective and laminated or toughened safety glass cost more than clear float glass.
- Colour and hardware. Some colours, handles and multi-point locks cost more than the standard options.
- The opening. New, square openings are simplest. Removing old steel frames, an uneven floor or a weak lintel all add work.
- Location and access. The measure is free in Greater Gaborone; travel is added further away, and double-storey access can add time.

Window codes and glass on your quote
House plans and aluminium quotes in Botswana and South Africa often use short window codes. Exact codes vary by supplier and profile system, so always ask for a plain description next to each code.
Top-hung window codes: PT, PTT and P4TT
PT is usually a top-hung window with one opening vent, PTT has two vents and P4TT has four. The numbers give the opening size in hundreds of millimetres, width first, so PT1512 means 1500 × 1200 mm. Many manufacturers make the window about 10 mm smaller than the code size so that it fits the opening.
Sliding window codes (DX, SX and similar)
Sliding windows and doors use supplier-specific letters. In many catalogues X marks a sliding panel and O a fixed panel. Letters such as DX or SX mean different things to different suppliers, so confirm which panels slide before you order.
Glass thickness: 4 mm vs 6.38 mm laminated
Small standard window panes are often glazed in clear float glass such as 4 mm. Doors, large panes, low panes and glass near floors or baths should be safety glass. 6.38 mm laminated is the usual choice: the interlayer holds the glass together if it breaks. South Africa's SANS 10400 Part N sets these rules, and it is good practice here too. Ask for the glass type on each line of your quote.
