A bifold door is a row of hinged aluminium-framed glass panels that run on a top track and fold to one or both sides. Fully open, it clears almost the whole opening, which a sliding door cannot do. Fold direction
Folding outward saves room inside; folding inward keeps panels out of the rain and away from patio furniture.
Stacking side
All panels to one side, or split to both sides. Odd panel counts usually include a traffic door.
Threshold
A standard weathered sill keeps rain and dust out best; a lower threshold gives a flush step to the patio where the slab allows.
Glass
Clear safety glass is standard for large panels; tinted or reflective glass cuts glare on west-facing patios.
Colour
Black, bronze, charcoal, white and silver, matched to your aluminium windows and doors.

Recent project: aluminium bifold door in Gaborone North
A five-panel aluminium bifold door in a wood-grain bronze finish with tinted glass, being fitted to a new house in Gaborone North. The photos show the install in progress on a live building site: panels folding and stacking to one side to open the full patio, and the door closed with the protective film still on the frames. The film comes off once the builders have finished plastering and painting, so the frames stay unmarked.

Bifold door installation
How we install a bifold door.
Most bifold problems, such as panels that drag, locks that will not meet and water at the sill, come from the opening rather than the door. That is why we measure the opening ourselves and check it before fabrication.
- 1. Check the opening. Width, height and diagonals, the lintel or beam above (it carries the top track) and the floor level across the opening.
- 2. Set the frame. The outer frame is fixed level, square and plumb, packed and anchored into the brickwork.
- 3. Hang the panels. Panels are hung on the track and hinges, then adjusted so they fold and stack evenly.
- 4. Seal and test. We seal the frame to the wall, check the sill drains, then test every lock, handle and the traffic door before handover.
Building new? Tell your builder early: the opening needs a sound lintel and a level slab, and the floor finish height should be known before the door is made.

Bifold or sliding?
Bifold doors vs patio sliders.
A bifold clears almost the whole opening but has more frame lines when closed and more hardware to keep clean. A sliding patio door has bigger glass panes and fewer parts, but at least one panel always stays in the opening. It depends on the opening width and the panel width you prefer. Around 2.5 to 3 m usually takes three panels; wider patios take five or six.
Should the bifold fold inside or outside?+
Outward folding saves room inside; inward folding keeps panels out of the weather. We advise on the measure based on your patio and roof overhang.
Can a bifold door have a normal everyday door?+
Yes. A lead panel can be set up as a traffic door so you can go in and out without folding the whole set.
